Synopsis:
CBSE is moving forward with on-screen marking (OSM) for the Class 12 board examination to advance digital performance and improve evaluation accuracy. In this issue, the CBSE board has instructed schools to contact the relevant authorities. In detail, the lines explain the benefits that the evaluated exam papers and the teachers can gain from evaluating class 12 board exam papers using OSM.
The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has shifted from physical mode evaluation to an electronic on-screen marking system. It is a major initiative to shift from manual to digital processes to improve efficiency and effectiveness in exam-related processes. On-screen marking is being implemented for Class 12 answer books, and the previous manual process will apply to Class 10 board exam papers.
Every year, CBSE conducts Board exams for Class 10 and 12 for approximately 46 lakh students, and correcting exam papers is a time-intensive exercise. To streamline the exam evaluation process and reduce stress for evaluators, Dr Sanyam Bhardwaj, Controller of Examinations, CBSE, said the Board is introducing On-Screen Marking as part of its ongoing efforts to enhance efficiency and transparency in evaluation. The decision has been made, and implementation of a reduction in reliance on the manual process has been initiated.
The on-screen marking shall enable teachers from affiliate schools to benefit from faster evaluation and greater teacher participation.
The On-screen marking system automatically calculates marks, eliminating totalling errors.
With reduced human intervention, automated coordination will speed up the process, thereby minimising the risk of errors.
After human intervention, totals are re-verified, which delays processing. The automatic verification eliminates post-result verification, saving time and enabling quick release of results.
Another major advantage of on-screen marking is that it reduces workforce involvement, thereby saving transportation costs, as physical answer books need not be moved between locations.
Teachers can discharge their regular responsibilities in their schools, while affiliate school teachers can benefit from the opportunity to evaluate the papers.
Teachers from CBSE-affiliated schools worldwide can participate.
The introduction of on-screen marking can push CBSE toward sustainable, digital, and environmentally friendly evaluation.
The CBSE asked schools to implement tools and devices to seek technical readiness, and in the process, the school must be equipped with:
A computer lab with a Public Static IP, as per Affiliation
PCs or laptops with Windows OS 8 or above
The hardware configuration requires at least 4 GB of RAM and 1 GB of free C: drive space.
The school must update the internet browser, including Chrome, Edge, Firefox, or Internet Explorer
The school must install Adobe Reader software.
The school must arrange reliable internet connectivity with a minimum speed of 2 Mbps
The school must arrange an uninterrupted internet power supply.
CBSE should support the OSM transition by making teachers adopt the new system. The CBSE has devised support measures to ensure that schools and teachers adopt essential technological practices.
The CBSE provides teachers with OASIS IDs to log in and familiarise themselves with the OSM platform.
The CBSE conducts dry runs for teachers to practise digital evaluation.
CBSE organises training programmes and maintains a dedicated call centre to resolve issues as they arise.
The CBSE will release instructional videos to guide teachers step by step.
The CBSE provides instructions on activities and circulates them to teachers, enabling timely preparation.
CBSE board examinations shall begin for Class 10 and Class 12 from February 17 and end by April 10. The board has modified the examination schedule: it will conduct the Class 10 exam twice a year, and the second session exam shall be held from May 15 to June 1.
