Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) enables students to apply to top-tier universities on a single platform, where many engineering colleges gather to offer admission seats. The JoSAA admission procedures begin in the second and third weeks of June every year. JEE high percentile scorers can learn the roadmap to engineering colleges and understand the complex admissions process, thereby ensuring a smooth, safe entry into engineering streams.
JoSAA handles the entire engineering counselling process, including IITs, NITs, IIITs, Govt-funded institutions, and deemed institutions. Immediately after the declaration of the JEE Advanced 2026 results, candidates who have sought eligibility for admission to engineering colleges can begin their preparation in accordance with the JoSAA admission procedures. These engineering admissions will take place in six rounds.
The Ministry of Education sets up Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JOSAA) to manage and regulate centralised seat allocation. The authority covers over 100 premier engineering institutes, including IITs, NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs. The primary purpose of the JoSAA is to allot engineering seats to deserving candidates who have secured cutoff scores in the JEE Main and JEE Advanced exams.
JEE Main → JEE Advanced → JoSAA Registration → Choice Filling → Lock Choices → Seat Allotment → Fee Payment → Document Verification → Final Seat → Reporting to College
Once the results of JEE Main and JEE Advanced are out, seat allotment across different engineering streams begins, though it is a complex process. It requires a proper understanding of the filling activity before selecting the right course based on the percentile. First, JoSAA fills the IITs across the nation, and later, the JEE Main 2026 seats for NITs, IIITs, and Govt-funded institutions begin.
JoSAA registration is mandatory for the candidate to access the registration link. The candidate must log in to the JoSAA 2026 registration link at the authorised website: josaa.nic.in. Before an aspirant begins the registration process, the essential information required is: JEE Main application number, password, and the JEE Advanced application number, wherever applicable.
The applicant must visit the official web portal and click the "New Candidate Registration" link.
The applicant must log in to the application form by entering the login credentials, application number and Date of Birth.
The applicant must enter their personal information and academic details. Later, fill in the college choices, and lock them for future usage.
It is the primary step in the admissions process, and a student must select the right choices, including institutes, branches, and a preference order.
The applicant must strictly adhere to the preference order and lock the choices. The applicant must play cautiously, as once locked, the choice modifications cannot be altered. If an applicant doesn't execute the lock choice, the system shall automatically execute at the deadlines.
JoSAA conducts multiple rounds and metrics to determine the set allotment, which shall depend on rank, category, availability, & preference order. The applicant is allotted the highest preference seat.
Once the applicant receives the chosen preference, they should freeze it immediately and accept the seat permanently. There shall be no further upgrade.
It means the applicant has accepted the seat but is allowed to upgrade to a better institution.
It means the applicant has accepted the institution, but allows an upgrade to a better branch in the same institution.
The applicant must pay a fee, usually in the range of ₹15,000 — SC/ST/PwD & ₹35,000 — General/OBC/EWS
The applicant will need ot upload the essential documents, such as:
JEE Admit Card
Rank Card
Class 10 Certificate
Class 12 Marksheet
Category Certificate (if applicable)
ID Proof
Passport Photo
Applicants are eligible to participate in the remaining rounds: 2, 3, 4 & 6.
After completion of the last round, the applicant shall receive the allotment letter, which includes the institution and branch.
The applicant must report the following details on the college premises: online or physical reporting, document verification, institution fee payment, and admission confirmation. As a result, the applicant is said to have completed admission formalities.
JoSAA invites applicants to fill the vacant seats by participating in the Central Seat Allocation Board (CSAB) Special Rounds. These special rounds are applicable to students who wish to apply to NIT, IIIT, or GFTI and are exclusive of IIT.
In India, there are over 62,000 engineering seats, of which 18,160 are across the 23 IITs, and the rest are over 45,000. JoSAA facilitates admissions to engineering colleges for JEE Advanced and JEE Main achievers. The entire admission process to engineering colleges is digital, and at the final stage, the applicant must reach the allotted seat at the institution for confirmation of admission.
