NEET 2026 students, NEET is getting easier this year. The government has approved 43 new medical colleges and added 20,649 new seats (including MBBS and PG). And this is exactly why you should not panic the way most students are doing.
Earlier the problem was simple: too many students, too few seats. That’s why cut-offs felt scary and competition looked impossible. But now things are slowly changing. More colleges means more seats, and more seats means your chances are automatically improving.
NEET 2026 is still competitive, and lakhs of students will still appear. The difference is, now the gap between effort and result is becoming a little more fair. If you prepare well, your chances of converting that effort into a seat are higher than before. Now comes the important part. This is not your excuse to slow down. This is your opportunity to push harder. Think of it like this, when doors increase, the ones who are ready will walk through them first.
There are now more options available for candidates taking the NEET UG 2026 test (3 May 2026). With an increased number of colleges and seats, there could be less pressure, particularly in government colleges that have opened more recently. Those candidates scoring in the range of 550–600 can benefit in getting MBBS seats during the counselling process.
These approvals for 43 new medical colleges are made based on a series of processes prescribed by the National Medical Commission (NMC). To begin with, interested educational institutions apply online to the NMC. The NMC then thoroughly scrutinizes the application and examines if the college in question fulfills certain requirements like the presence of the necessary infrastructure, teaching staff, and number of beds available in the hospital for training the students. The next stage involves an extensive verification process. Once the requirements have been fulfilled, NMC provides the Letter of Permission (LoP). This is the point where a new medical college can either be started or seats can be increased.
There will be an insignificant fall in cut-offs due to the addition of more seats in MBBS. Neet 2026 Cut-offs for government medical colleges will fall by about 5-15 points; state quota and mid-tier colleges will experience a fall by 10-25 points; whereas private medical colleges will observe a cut-off reduction of 20-40 points in certain instances. As far as the ranks go, it can be anticipated that a difference of 1,000-5,000 ranks will occur primarily favoring candidates who narrowly missed admission previously. The recommended score for a government college will be marginally lowered from 620-650 to 600-640.
