NTA guarantees to plug the exam paper leak by bringing a major change: the exam shall be in CBT mode, a shift from OMR (paper & pen). In addition, the content describes the other changes that are likely to be met in NEET 2027 onward.

NTA brings a major change in the NEET 2027 examination, as the mode of examination shall be from OMR to CBT. The information centres on the need for the impending change and the measures adopted to tighten examination loopholes at various levels, from the question paper printing press to transportation, to the storehouse, to the examination hall, and back to NTA custody. Finally, NTA defines border outlines to plug loopholes and ensure the NEET 2027 examination is free from paper leaks.
The paper leak that arose after the NEET 2026 exam held on May 2, 2026, has created panic among 22 lakh medical aspirants. Although the exam was scrapped and reconducted on June 21, 2026, NTA, the National Testing Agency, revamped the examination procedures for result declaration.
The NTA made a concerted effort to address the flaws that led to the failure of the NEET 2026 exam. In this mood, NTA has taken a drastic step to change the mode of examination from OMR ( pen & paper) to a computer-based test (CBT).
There is a possibility that the entire examination pattern and correction shall be on the lines of the IIT-JEE examination. It means the basic method for evaluating rank shall shift from the conventional method to the percentile system, as is done for IIT JEE.
Every year, at least 20 lakh medical aspirants appear for the NEET examination, and it is held across the nation on a single day in a single shift. It involves extensive infrastructure, manpower, and a coordination mechanism that includes support from the security forces of the State and Central governments.
After confronting the bitter experience of the paper leak that deeply penetrated and fractured the basis for the free and fair conduct of the examination.
The NTA decided to conduct the NEET exam over the week in shifts, similar to IIT-JEE. It means the question paper changes from shift to shift, and the level of difficulty varies too.
Given such variation in difficulty, normalisation is the only statistical tool that can determine rankings using the percentile system. Therefore, let us be prepared for a change in the paper evaluation technique.
The shift from OMR sheets to CBT mode shall reduce manual errors arising from anxiety or stress in the exam hall.
In CBT mode, there is no need to bubble as the answers can be edited electronically.
As the examination is spread across the week in shifts, the workload on the exam management committee and peer pressure are reduced considerably. The NEET aspirant can appear in a stress-free environment with low capacity of exam takers at the exam centres.
The exam paper evaluation is performed using normalisation techniques, thereby providing more accurate and precise percentile results.
Every exam centre shall be equipped with high-quality, high-level security systems, biometrics, Aadhaar Verification, frisking, etc.
The Radhakrishnan Panel and the long-running parliamentary discussion have led to well-structured recommendations stating that the CBT mode of examination shall be extended to deep, remote rural locations in India.
Aspirants need not panic, as the NTA remains committed to supporting remotest students by organising CBT-mode mock tests to overcome fear and anxiety at the examination centre. The NTA wants to reschedule the examination procedures to maintain a completely transparent, safe, and secure examination.
