The National Medical Commission is seriously engaging in filling medical seats as per the allotment, and it will be a continual process until the creation of 75,000 new medical seats is filled by the end of 5 consecutive years. The increase in medical seats is the continued effort of the NMC to fulfill the central government’s commitment.
With the increase in medical seats, more and more institutions are submitting their requests to add new seats, or newer medical colleges or institutions are coming up in medical education. The commission conducts a strict evaluation, based on which an institution is either restricted from entering the stream of medical institutions or prohibited from increasing the existing colleges to increase the new seats. The current information is the update of two consecutive academic years, 2024-25 and 2025-26.
With a view to improving the medical education in India, as many as 41 new medical colleges have been approved. The total number of medical colleges in India has reached 816.

In September 2025, the National Medical Commission (NMC) added 6,850 seats; of them, 1,056 seats were permitted for counseling due to several reasons, such as pending court cases, delays in approvals, renewals, and supernumerary seats.
Again, after a span of 10 days, NMC has updated the seat allotment to 7,375 seats, but 456 seats were reduced. This revision came into effect after the approval of the cabinet. 10,000 MBBS seats expanded as per the Centrally Sponsored Scheme under Phase 3.
