Every year, the national-level competition among JEE Main participants is increasing rapidly. The probability of selection to NIT, IIIT, and GFTI decreases as competition intensifies. However, at a broader level, getting your name listed for an engineering course at a leading technological institution depends solely on your category and your JEE Main 2026 score or percentile. Moreover, increasing year-on-year competition continues to change the cut-off scores by at least 2-3 per cent. JEE Main is a national-level examination that requires precise score calculation to secure admission to your desired college and course. Here is the chronicle of information that determines the college and stream of study, based on the obtained marks and calculated percentiles, yielding the most accurate result. Keeping in mind the desired percentile score you are expected to achieve in JEE Main 2026, experts aim to provide realistic facts that help you realise your dreams.
After taking the JEE Main 2026, your total marks out of 300 determine your rank, your stream of study, and college admission. NTA determines your rank profile by seeking the results of Sessions 1 and 2, and the best of the two is considered before assigning the percentile marks. Experts have identified a specific percentile in past counselling data and have drawn conclusions based on the category and the desired college you intend to join, including NITs, IIITs, or top prestigious colleges. Here are a few strategic points that must be borne in mind by you when you are keen to join the best colleges of NIT with the most rewarding course leading to a futuristic career. At a grosser level, your mind's intention should be high to achieve the desired scores and should be in this manner.
As an aspirant, experts advise you to aim for a good JEE Main 2026 score based on your target.
If you aim to secure a good rank in JEE Advanced and gain admission to IITs, your JEE Main target should be at least 97%.
If you want to achieve a good rank in NITs and pursue a top academic career, your score must be in the 98.5th-99th percentile, or higher.
Remember, percentiles are the most essential measure for assessing your performance on a given date and slot. This system ensures uniformity in awarding marks, even when some JEE Main exams appear more challenging than others. The percentile obtained shall provide the rank relative to others who approach the same test.
Depending on the previous year's cutoff for your category, add at least 2-3 per cent more; this should be your goal for the current year JEE Main 2026.
Please attempt both sessions 1 & 2. When selecting the score, the higher of the two is used before the aspirant is awarded the final percentile.
Category | Top NIT CSE | Good NITs | NIT Core | JEE Adv Cutoff |
GEN | 240 | 215 | 185 | 105 |
OBC | 210 | 185 | 160 | 85 |
EWS | 220 | 195 | 170 | 95 |
SC | 155 | 135 | 105 | 65 |
ST | 135 | 115 | 85 | 55 |
The two diagrams represent a table and a graph. The table presents facts categorised by type, with each column providing information on NIT CSE, Good NITs, NIT core, and the most probable JEE Adv—cutoff score. Below the tabulation, the category-wise score range is shown along the x-axis, and the top scores along the Y-axis. The clusters for each category represent the top NIT CSE, Good NITs, NIT core, and JEE Adv cutoff.

The second tabulation presents percentile scores by category, which define the top NITs, Good NITs, Core NITs, and the JEE Advanced 2026 Cutoff.
Summary:
This information serves as a reference for JEE aspirants, helping them set realistic targets to achieve their desired goals. It connects JEE aspirants with the scores and percentiles they need to achieve to secure admission to various grades at NIT campuses.
An aspirant must be aware of category-wise good scores, as this helps them set appropriate targets for admission to good engineering institutions.
These percentiles are the derivations from previous years’ JEE Main scoreboards; for the current year, an aspirant should add 2-3 per cent and then set targets based on their abilities and aspirations.
JEE Main exams are conducted throughout the week in January and April, in two shifts each day. On some exams, the paper may appear more difficult than on other days or in different slots. Here, percentile calculations benefit aspirants who face more challenging situations than those in other days' slots.
