Are you interested in getting your child admitted to the best Computer Science Engineering Discipline across the country? To fulfil your word or your child's preparation to achieve the set target goal, you and your child should understand the score bandwidth of marks one could fall in, and that too, category-wise. Below is the list of scores, bandwidth and percentiles required for admission to the five top colleges: Trichy, Warangal, Suratkal, Allahabad, Roorkela, & Jaipur.
Supporting statistics indicate that the JEE Main competitive exam is growing enormously. In 2025, total unique registrations were 1,539,848, with session 1 at 1,311,544 and session 02 at 1,061,840.
In the JEE Main 2026 session 1, approximately 14.5 lakh aspirants participated; in just one year, an additional 1 lakh have participated.
With such an intense level of competition, every parent and child is getting curious about the competitiveness in various disciplines, notably Computer Science Engineering (CSE) at the NIT level, which are the institutions at the apex level and for that, your child needs to get top scores in JEE Main ( 2026).
If your child dreams of studying computer science engineering at any of the top 5 NITs, a strong score of 220+ to 250+ will be essential for general category aspirants, while the score targets drop for EWS, OBC, SC, and ST successively.
If your child is determined to pursue computer science engineering (CSE) by qualifying through a national-level competition, such as JEE Main (2026), and aims to get into one of the top 5 NITs, this information will serve your purpose well.
The percentile is the best way to interpret the likelihood of achieving a desired rank. Your child's achieved scores don't guarantee a rank that reserves their CSE seat at any of the top 5 NITs. Why is it so? You can understand through an illustration quite easily:
JoSAA may assign your child's JEE Main 2026 exam on any day of session 1 or 2 and any shift, at its discretion.
The day your child appears for the exam may be challenging, whereas on another day it could be easier.
The scores will vary accordingly, so aspirants who scored highly on an easy paper will have an edge over your child.
To overcome such a situation, NTA do calculate percentile based on the normalisation technique, and ranks are aligned accordingly, no matter how the question paper is, easy, moderate, or challenging.
JEE Main 2026 Ranks Shall be Derived Using the Percentile System:
From the scores of JEE Main aspirants, ranks are derived using the percentile method. The most error-free form of calculating the positions of an aspirant among the rest of the JEE Main participants. In fact, percentiles are the most accurate way to assess the ranks of aspirants and others listed in the tables.
You can review key metrics, such as score and percentile cutoffs, to secure admission to the top 5 Fortune-ranked colleges that open doors for JEE Main achievers to the prestigious Computer Science Engineering program.

The above table describes the percentiles that your child should obtain to seek admission to the top 5 NITs colleges, which are tabulated column-wise, and each row of the table represents a category.
In India, we have 127 institutions, of which NITs share 31 across the country, formerly the Regional Engineering Colleges. It shouldn't surprise parents, upon listening, to learn they are ranked immediately below IITs.
Statistics indicate approximately 1,891 seats, with the top 5 NITs offering 500-660 computer science seats. The statistics suggest that the top 5 NITs account for 25% to 35% of CSE seats. Admission depends on category and marks, which can seem complex but are crucial for understanding your child's chances.
Your child can secure admission to any of the top 5 NITs, but admission is contingent on two key parameters: your category & your child's marks. An allocation of CBS seats by category is made available for parents and their children for reference.

The table above lists the cutoff marks for various categories, corresponding to the top 5 NITs.
Summary:
The above content and tabulations refer to the cutoff marks and percentiles required for admission to the top 5 NITs. This informative blog helps you assess your child's level of preparedness before the JEE Main 2026.
A percentile is the percentage measure of how you have scored compared to others in an exam. If your child scores at the 99.9th percentile, it means they have scored better than 99.9 per cent of others. The method of calculating a percentile is known as normalisation.
In JEE Main 2026, NTA may assign your child a specific date and shift for the exam, at JoSAA's discretion. Since NTA conducts the same exam multiple times, the paper may appear easy, moderate, or difficult each time.
Therefore, the evaluators do use the normalisation technique.
The above tabulations show the cutoff bandwidth marks and the percentile your child should achieve, with an approximate 2%-3% at the top 5 NITs.
