National Testing Agency, NTA, has taken urgent steps to curb paper leak issues and has initiated a deep review of the agency's testing activities. The agency plans to reform the NEET examination by introducing a transparent, flexible, & AI-driven security system from 2027 onwards. It would be in the lines of the IIT-JEE, a similar, nationwide examination.
Below are the facts outlining the most probable changes that have yet to be announced. NTA is looking for a free and fair NEET examination without any discrepancies or paper leaks.
The horrific NEET 2026 question paper leak has sparked a huge outcry among the student community. A nationwide agitation has begun after the message of the NEET paper leak surfaced online. The NEET 2026 exam, held on May 03, was cancelled on May 12 due to a nationwide paper leak. In this issue, NTA is expected to bring major changes to the NEET examination process.
In the current situation, the candidate is provided with physical OMR sheets to mark bubbles on the correct answers. The candidate shall have to mark directly on a computer screen, which could be observed as a shift in how answers are marked on the question papers. For instance, IIT-JEE is a computer-based test, CBT mode, and the chances of mistakes are almost negligible.
Identification of candidates and prevention of cheating and impersonation can be achieved to a greater extent by incorporating Artificial Intelligence surveillance, biometric verification, and real-time monitoring. In fact, for the IIT-JEE examinations, this kind of security and monitoring system is operational and effectively controls malpractice.
Year on year, the total number of participants enrolling for NEET and writing the exam is increasing by leaps and bounds. This year alone, 20 lakh applicants have applied for it. The experts find that multiple examinations across shifts over several days are needed to ensure a smoother transition during their conduct. It is similar to the type of examination conducted for IIT-JEE aspirants.
When the NEET examination is conducted in multiple shifts, as in the IIT-JEE examination, a normalisation procedure will need to be introduced. In this procedure, a fair evaluation of answers will be possible across all days and multiple shifts, as each paper appears at a different level of difficulty.
The structure and syllabus are most likely to remain the same with no alterations, and the negative marking shall continue with the same rules, as assigned before. The syllabus is as per the NCERT books, and the questions require critical evaluation and analytical analysis.
The National Medical Commission (NMC, the regulatory body for medicine) may introduce an upper age limit and also cap the maximum number of attempts to write NEET. Eligibility can align with the IIT-JEE eligibility criteria. With the introduction of age-limit criteria, a candidate can prioritise other career options.
Before the NEET 2026 results were declared, there was an uproar that question papers for various subjects had been leaked across different states nationwide. NEET candidates from all major cities in the country participated in an agitation on the paper leak issue. Many opposition political parties repeatedly asked the ruling party for explanations, and the entire episode became a turmoil. However, NTA assured that it would conduct a re-examination on June 21, 2026, and ensure the exam is conducted with complete transparency and free of malpractice. In this issue, Resonance junior colleges provide complete support to their students and ensure they are prepared for the revision classes for NEET 2026 again. Over the media, several news outlets aired that NTA would bring about significant changes to avoid the lapses that occurred in 2026. The above information outlines the likely changes NTA may make to enhance flexibility and transparency and maintain a hassle-free exam environment.
