The Central Board of Secondary Education, CBSE, has initiated a new method of evaluating the answer sheets of its students who appeared for the board exams. This year, CBSE's Class 12th students' answer sheets were corrected on screen by adopting an on-screen marking system, OSM. The lines below highlight the importance and benefits that a parent and a student will receive in the near future. Yes, it is all about the Class 12th answer sheets being placed online for evaluation.
Over 98.66 lakh answer sheets were evaluated under the new digital framework that moved towards greater transparency, student-centric reforms as mentioned in the National Education Policy, NEP. Students' answer papers are evaluated on-screen, in a digital format, with the sheets made accessible to teachers directly on their respective computer screens. In this evaluation system, the answer papers are not physically transported from exam paper storage rooms to the examiners' rooms for evaluation. The major advantage of this digital evaluation system is that teachers from affiliated schools, both within and outside India, can evaluate students' answer sheets from another location. As a result, the evaluation process is quickly rendered safe and secure.
In a broader sense, the on-screen marking system has gained greater prominence than traditional evaluation for various reasons. Given both evaluation systems, the on-screen marking system scores higher in the comparison. Let's cover various aspects to consider, including totalling errors.
Yes, in traditional evaluation, errors can occur, but in OSM, they should be eliminated.
While evaluating answer sheets, a teacher may make mistakes when posting or uploading them, which does not occur in OSM. The error that can arise shall be eliminated.
A portion of the answer sheets can remain uncorrected, leaving the evaluation of the answer paper incomplete.
In real-time paper evaluation, answer scripts need to be transported, and human intervention is required, whereas in an on-screen marking system, neither is required.
In the transportation of answer sheets from the safe lockers to the correction centres, there is a risk of losing or damaging the scripts; hence, human involvement is necessary. While using the OSM, there is no risk of answer scripts being lost or damaged.
While evaluating the answer scripts, a teacher shall require the physical answer script and a pen; for OSM, the teacher will need a digital script and a mouse.
A teacher's capacity to evaluate answer scripts will be 20 to 25, while the digital platform can evaluate approximately 30 scripts.
Teachers have viewed CBSE's new paper-evaluation platform as a major step towards modernising evaluation. The OSM system will eliminate errors in calculating and uploading marks, leading to a more accurate assessment of students' performance. In due course, the examiners noticed that the digital procedure has made the procedure most transparent and accountable. Some of the teachers said they underwent training, and later, the system subsequently proved to be simple and user-friendly. A few went so far as to say that the paperless evaluation process is a positive step towards environmental conservation. Comments flooded in, with many believing the OSM activity would strengthen students' and parents' confidence in the examination results.
CBSE has initiated an on-screen marking system for the class 12 exams from now onwards. It provides immense advantages to both teachers, parents and the student community. By digitising the evaluation process, CBSE will be able to make the examination process greener.
