Synopsis:
The Coaching Federation of India (CFI) has identified 17 errors in various shift papers of JEE Main 2026 Session 1 and demanded bonus marks for everyone who attempted them. The federation argued that one mark can change ranks and offered a logical explanation: 10 questions had flaws that require special attention. In this issue, NTA is facing severe criticism, and CFI is demanding a strong response that benefits the affected candidates, particularly for the top 10 most flawed questions. The lines indicate the current status, even as we await the NTA's decision on which marks to add or omit before releasing the final JEE Main 2026 session 1 results on February 12.
Several candidates who appeared for the JEE Main 2026 Session 1 identified errors on the provisional marks sheet across shifts, and many challenged the answers outright. The Coaching Federation of India was no exception; it made every attempt to challenge the identified incorrect answers. The candidates faced challenges with the presentation to the NTA for verification, yet CFI demands bonus marks for at least 10 prominent questions that were flawed.
10 Questions were ambiguous, and expert evaluators say that the questions are fundamentally incorrect. And it is here that CFI demanded full bonus marks for every candidate who attempted the test.
Another 7 questions carried technical errors; they contained incorrect answer options. There were numerical inconsistencies, or they possessed multiple correct answers.
In detail,
The physics paper had the highest error count among the others; it identified multiple questions with ambiguous wording or incorrect answers. The mistakes were in Optics, Kinetic Theory of Gases (KTG), Thermodynamics, and Nuclear Physics.
Similarly, in Chemistry, errors were identifiable in Thermodynamics and Electrochemistry.
Likewise, in Mathematics, similar discrepancies were observed in questions relating to vectors.
Let us understand the repercussions a student may face, both positive and negative, but positivity paves the way to progress.
If the question is incorrect or measures multiple correct answers, or the question falls out of the preview of the syllabus, then the evaluators must either add bonus marks or remove the question from evaluation. It is one of the best ways to retain fairness in examinations.
It can adversely affect admissions and college opportunities, as admissions decisions depend on percentiles, and a slight change in a percentile can drop or raise an applicant's rank by thousands of points. However, it is always wise to note that a corrected answer key can significantly affect a student's future.
The provisional answer key may contain discrepancies, but it is essential to know that:
The answer key is a step towards transparency
Provides candidates with the opportunity to participate in the evaluation of exam papers.
In a sense, it ensures the final key is accurate.
The provisional key is the only source of evidence for the students to challenge the errors in the provisional marks list.
JEE candidates have a valuable opportunity to compare their answers with trusted sources.
Candidates should not hesitate to raise objections when they are confident they have valid evidence to support their position.
The candidate must wait until the final answer key is published. This year, for session 1, it is February 12, 2026.
The candidate must never panic or become discouraged by provisional percentile scores.
After the closure of the challenge window at the NTA web portal, Candidates have to wait until the final solutions for the Session 1 exam assessment are put on display. Aspirants must note that NTA's expert panel discussion on the Answer key is the ultimate, and candidates do not hold the entitlement to challenge NTA in the court of law.
